The evolution of this specialty of Medicine
that deals with Ear, Nose and Throat disorders started with the Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat specialist from many years ago.
This field grew to such magnitude that it would have been
impossible to maintain expertise in all of the eye disorders
as well as the growth of the ear, nose, and throat domain.
This
group was then divided into Eye Specialists (Ophthalmologists) and Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists (Otorhinolaryngologists,
ENT physicians) during the 60's and the 70's. The logical
progression into Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery is also included in this specialty, and further subdivisions into even
more specialized areas such as Facial Plastic Surgery, Ear Nose and Throat Allergy, Inner Ear Specialists
(Neurootologists),
and even Head and Neck Cancer Specialists (which all have the same
basis in Ear Nose and Throat training).
